Winter 2013 / 2014 playlist

image

Winter’s gone, spring is here (apparently). This is a playlist of songs that guided the new musical ship through those long, dark nights.

1. Eagulls - Tough Luck

Well done Leeds, you’ve made a lot of angry young teens (who, like the rest of us, are undoubtedly sick to the back teeth of wet West London waste band after wet west London waste band) rather happy.

2. Ben Khan - Savage

The sound of a man coming into his own. Keep going, Ben, we’ll all forget that Jai Paul one soon anyway.

3. Future Islands - Waiting On You

Oh, the power of a live performance. They’ve been doing this for over ten years now, so it’s nice to see some good guys (finally) come out #winning.

4. School - SoLong

*Bass face* -  a perfect sub 3 minute power-dream-pop track. The end.

5. Cymbals - Erosion

Was always a tad sceptical of Cymbals, but this, oh this, smacked away any doubts. What glorious deliverance.

Not updated this page in a while, so here goes. Around Christmas time, the 23rd to be precise, Glasgow’s Life Model released new single “Come Round”, an ‘epic' whirl of immersive noise and the follow up to debut EP last April. Despite not being one bit synth-pop - and not exactly radio friendly at nearly six minutes - it still found it's way onto Radio 1, Fake DIY & The Fly, amongst others. Looks like there's hope for music yet. You can buy it here.

Spring 2013 playlist

Flyying Colours - Wavygravy

OH LOOK, ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE AUSTRALIAN BANDS. That’s right, Flyyyyyying Colours debut sounds utterly brilliant (and it’s free, too).

Street Gnar - Twenty Two, Twenty Two

Along with Kurt Vile’s new album, this is one of those perfect Sunday songs. Total feel good vibes.

Heathers - Colossi of Memnon

Seven minutes long? You what? In an age when we can’t stay focussed for more than 30 seconds? Yep, and it’s one of the best things you’ll hear in 2013, hands down.

Spent Record Store Day 2013 at Teesside’s last remaning shop, the ever brilliant Sound It Out (that’s a photo I took on The Guardian, by the way).
I made a short film about the day too, which you can watch below.

'Blogger creates label' - I bet you've heard that a few times before, right? Well, there is only so much fulfillment one get when writing about a band. Helping them progress with a physical product means so much more in an age where digital reigns king and new acts are ten a penny.
So with that said, please welcome Viscerality Records.
Glasgow five piece Life Model make some of the most exhilarating, pop-tinged shoegaze around. It’s a real pleasure to be releasing their debut EP, which can be pre-ordred - both physically and digitally - here for an April 1 release: http://visceralityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/life-model-ep
